<p>As October comes to a close, we take a moment to reflect on the incredible artists and their works that have graced our New This Week series throughout the month. Our spotlight shone brightly on the creative minds of <a href="https://browngrotta.com/artists/tim-johnson">Tim Johnson</a>, <a href="https://browngrotta.com/artists/gyongy-laky">Gyöngy Laky</a>, <a href="https://browngrotta.com/artists/glen-kaufman">Glen Kaufman</a>, <a href="https://browngrotta.com/artists/stephanie-jacques">Stéphanie Jacques</a>, and <a href="https://browngrotta.com/artists/dona-look">Dona Look.</a> Their unique talents and innovative approaches to art have left a lasting impression on our community.</p>



<p>But, that&#8217;s not all that October brought to browngrotta arts. We proudly launched the much-anticipated <em>Vignettes</em> exhibition, a harmonious fusion of three distinct showcases. Our in-person exhibition opened its doors, allowing art enthusiasts to experience the masterful craftsmanship of wood sculptor Dorothy Gill Barnes, the visionary weaving and surface design of Glen Kaufman, and the captivating diversity of <em>An Abundance of Objects</em>, featuring an array of baskets, ceramics, and sculptures crafted by over three dozen talented artists.</p>



<p>As we bid farewell to October, we invite you to join us in revisiting the highlights from our New This Week features and to explore the rich tapestry of <em>Vignettes</em>, now <a href="https://browngrotta.com/exhibitions/vignettes">viewable on our website</a>. <p>Welcome to another edition of our New This Week series, where we embark on a journey through the world of contemporary art, one artist at a time. To kick off the month of October, we delve into the captivating creations of <a href="https://browngrotta.com/artists/tim-johnson">Tim Johnson</a>, a skilled artist and basketmaker hailing from the United Kingdom.</p>



<p>With a rich history spanning nearly three decades, Tim Johnson has dedicated himself to exploring the intricate relationships between materials, place, nature, and culture. His artistic voyage is a fusion of traditional craftsmanship and innovative techniques, influenced by his extensive travels across the globe.</p>



<p>What sets Tim Johnson apart is his ability to breathe new life into humble materials and age-old practices. He blurs the lines between art and craft, inviting us to reconsider how we perceive both. <p>As we look back on our features throughout October, it&#8217;s clear that <a href="https://browngrotta.com/artists/gyongy-laky">Gyöngy Laky</a> is a remarkable artist who has left an indelible mark on the world of sculpture. Her ability to blend tradition and innovation, creating sculptures that transcend boundaries, is nothing short of inspiring.</p>



<p>Laky&#8217;s influence extends far and wide, with her works featured in exhibitions spanning continents. Her early recognition for her linear sculptures, rooted in the architectural techniques of textile arts, marked the beginning of a remarkable career. Beyond gallery spaces, she has ventured into the realm of site-specific outdoor installations and contributed to land art projects in various corners of the globe, showcasing her adaptability and creativity.</p>

<p>Up next, we were privileged to feature the remarkable works of the late, renowned artist <strong><a href="https://browngrotta.com/artists/glen-kaufman">Glen Kaufman</a></strong>. Kaufman&#8217;s artistic legacy, spanning over four remarkable decades, left an indelible mark on the world of art.</p>



<p>Kaufman&#8217;s artistic odyssey began with a foundation in textural weaving and macramé, setting the stage for a lifelong pursuit of creative discovery. His restless spirit and boundless imagination led him to traverse uncharted territories in the realm of surface design. With a fusion of traditional techniques and contemporary sensibilities, he crafted sculptural forms that challenged the boundaries of artistic expression.</p>



<p>In the later stages of his career, Kaufman&#8217;s work underwent a transformation, reflecting a profound connection with Japanese aesthetics and architecture. His pieces, adorned with intricate photo collages and the application of gold and silver leaf, demonstrated a deep appreciation for the beauty of Japan&#8217;s artistic heritage.</p>



<p>As we celebrated Kaufman&#8217;s contributions this past month, we were reminded that true artistry transcends the constraints of time and place. We&#8217;re honored to continue his legacy by featuring his artistry in our ongoing Vignettes exhibition, where his works continue to inspire and captivate. </p>

<p>Continuing our artistic journey through October, we cast our spotlight on <a href="https://browngrotta.com/artists/stephanie-jacques">Stéphanie Jacques</a>, an artist whose work revolves around the art of connection. Jacques&#8217;s unique approach centers on weaving together elements that seemingly exist on opposite ends of the spectrum: hard and soft, old and new, valuable and trivial, conscious and unconscious, human and plant.</p>



<p>Her chosen mediums include wood, wicker, and clay, each one a canvas for her imaginative exploration. Basketry, cutting, and intricate assembly serve as both her tools and her muse, propelling her to discover novel solutions to age-old questions. </p>



<p>With each sculpture and installation, she delves deeper into the notion of connection, weaving together the threads of life in her own unique way. And yes, you&#8217;ll also find her work thoughtfully showcased in our ongoing <em>Vignettes</em> exhibition, a testament to her exceptional talent and boundless creativity. </p>

<p>And last, but certainly not least, we highlighted the work of artist <a href="https://browngrotta.com/artists/dona-look">Dona Look</a>. Look is a skilled basket maker from the beautiful landscapes of Wisconsin. Look&#8217;s art is deeply connected to the nature that surrounds her. She starts her creative process by gathering bark from the region&#8217;s birch trees. With this simple yet extraordinary material, she weaves intricate baskets, capturing the essence of the woodlands in her craft. To hold everything together, she uses silk thread, turning these natural elements into stunning works of art.</p>



<p>We were delighted to feature this talented artist&#8217;s work in the ongoing <em>Vignettes</em> exhibition, where her creations shine alongside those of other exceptional artists. </p>



<p>October has been more than just a showcase of talent; it&#8217;s been a month of expansion and connection. The launch of our <em>Vignettes</em> exhibition, both in-person and online, has allowed us to bridge physical and digital spaces, bringing art enthusiasts closer to the remarkable works of Dorothy Gill Barnes, Glen Kaufman, and a myriad of other gifted artists. <p>Elections have consequences, as they say, and 2020 election will be no different. Donald Trump tried to make the world to his artistic tastes. His reach was sweeping in efforts to cut funding for the arts and simultaneously oddly specific. I.e., DC should have no more contemporary architecture (<a href="https://www.npr.org/2020/02/13/805256707/just-plain-ugly-proposed-executive-order-takes-aim-at-modern-architecture">www.npr.org</a>); and duck stamps should feature hunting paraphernalia <a href="https://www.thedailybeast.com/trump-admin-demands-annual-duck-stamp-artworks-feature-hunting-paraphernalia">www.thedailybeast.com</a>. He oversaw the disbanding of the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, after a mass resignation of private committee members in response to his comments on right-wing violence in Charlottesville, VA in August 2017. And, of course, there would be four years of budgets that included cuts to federal arts programs — National Endowment for the Arts, National Endowment for the Humanities, Corporation for Public Broadcasting, even Museum and Library Services.</p>



<p>President-elect Joe Biden&#8217;s record is quite different. As <em>The New York Times </em>described him, he&#8217;s &#8220;No RBG, but a Loyal Promoter of Culture &#8220;<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/30/arts/biden-arts-culture.html">https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/30/arts/biden-arts-culture.html</a>. Biden’s attitude, wrote <em>The Times,</em> is “less from a consumer point of view and more about the inspirational value and transformational value of the arts,” quoting Robert L. Lynch, president and chief executive of <a href="https://www.americansforthearts.org/">Americans for the Arts</a>. “It’s not, ‘Look, I loved this piece, or this song.’ It’s more about the bigger role of the arts in society.” </p>

<p>Actors&#8217; Equity endorsed Biden&#8217;s candidacy. “Vice President Biden understands that the arts are a critical driver of healthy and strong local economies in cities and towns across the country,” said Kate Shindle, president of Actors’ Equity. That could bode well for passage of Americans for the Arts <em>Creative Workplace Proposal</em> — 16 specific actions for the next administration to take in order to put creative workers to work rebuilding, reimagining, unifying, and healing communities in every state and territory, as well as within tribal lands <a href="http://center/creative-workforce-proposal-endorsement">www.americansforthearts.org</a>. <p>A hanging sculpture of monofilament, <i>Untitled, </i>was acquired, through browngrotta arts, by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Sekimachi made only 20 monofilaments during the span of her entire career. <em>Untitled</em> is the Museum’s fourth piece by Sekimachi. The Museum’s other pieces include <em>Haleakala, Leaf Vessel #203 </em>and <em>Hornet’s Nest Bowl #103.</em></p>

<p>The Oita City Museum of Art, Prefecture, Japan acquired Kyoko Kumai’s  <em>Way of Water・Grass.</em> Additionally,  Kumai’s piece, <em>Air</em><i>, </i>has been acquired by the Manggha Museum of Japanese Art. <p>The Danish Arts Foundation, Copenhagen, Denmark acquired two works By Ane Henriksen. The pieces acquired<strong>,</strong> <em>Business Sky</em> and <em>National Tartan &#8211; DK</em> were both part of Henriksen’s solo exhibition <em>Jens Søndergaard with the touch of Ane Henriksen </em>at the Heltborg Museum, Thy, Denmark.</p>

<p>The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois recently acquired Chang Yeon-Soon’s <em>Matrix II-201011</em> through browngrotta arts. <em>Matrix II-201011</em> was featured in browngrotta arts’ exhibition <i>Stimulus: art and its inception</i>. Yeon-Soon’s <i>Matrix 132570 </i>was also acquired by the Racine Art Museum, Racine, Wisconsin.</p>

<p>The Danish Arts Foundation, Copenhagen, Denmark has acquired a piece from artist Gudrun Pagter. The piece, <em>Red Horizontal Line, </em>is now on display at the Aalborg University, Institute for Architecture and Media Technology.</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.browngrotta.com/Pages/look.php">Dona Look</a> &#8211; Museum of Wisconsin Art</strong></p>
<p>The Museum of Wisconsin Art acquired one of Dona Look’s baskets. The basket, which is made from white birch bark and waxed silk thread was a gift of Dennis Rocheleau and the GE Foundation. This is the Museum of Wisconsin Art’s third acquisition of Look’s work.</p>

<p>Each week of the year at <a href="http://www.browngrotta.com">browngrotta.com</a>, we draw attention to a work, a book or a project by one of the artists we represent. Beginning this December, we’ll be providing a monthly round up of these works here on arttextstyle.com. This month on <a href="http://www.browngrotta.com">browngrotta.com</a> we featured four very disparate works. First, baskets of white birch by <a href="http://www.browngrotta.com/Pages/look.php">Dona Look</a>, who harvests the bark herself in Wisconsin where she lives. &#8220;Look carefully selects bark from large, healthy trees that will soon be logged—evaluating the diameter of each tree and the bark’s thickness, for its unique markings and flexibility,” explains Jane Milosch in “The Entanglement of Nature and Man,” <em>Green from the Get Go: Contemporary International Basketmakers</em> (browngrotta arts, Wilton, CT 2016). &#8220;Collecting and preparing the bark is painstaking and must be done in the spring when the sap is running. Unfortunately, her work has become increasingly difficult of late as not all of the trees are in a natural cycle, and some are dying due to climate change, such as white birch trees, once prevalent in northern Wisconsin forests.&#8221; The simple geometric patterns of some of her works, writes Milosch, &#8220;recall the patterns of Native American parfleche pouches, which were a kind of geographical depictions of the surrounding land, at the same time her basket preserves the radiant splendor of birch.”</p>

<p>A strikingly different sensibility is evident in <em>Sen Man Na Yu Ta</em>, <a href="http://www.browngrotta.com/Pages/kumai.php">Kyoko Kumai’s</a> wall sculpture of stainless steel. The steel filaments, mass-produced in a factory, are inorganic and monotonous by themselves, but when they are woven, twisted or bundled together they take on an organic appearance that serves to express various aspects of wind, air and light.</p>

<p>Our third choice, <a href="http://www.browngrotta.com/Pages/balsgaard.php">Jane Balsgaard’s</a> <em>Glass Boat</em>, deftly blends a sail of lightly processed handmade paper and a hull of glossy glass. Finally, in <em>Process Piece</em>, <a href="http://www.browngrotta.com/Pages/rossbach.php">Ed Rossbach</a> takes on construction, deconstruction and reconstruction in one work. First, he printed an image onto fabric, then he unraveled the fabric and finally re-constructed it into a new version. “I thought he was crazy,” his wife, artist <a href="http://www.browngrotta.com/Pages/westphal.php">Katherine Westphal</a> told us.<br />
The four works create a fine sentiment for 2017: Seek the splendid, airy, shiny and light; be willing to re-envision and remake.</p>

<p>In the halls of the Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts in <strong>Lausanne, Switzerland</strong>, <em>Nomadic tapestries</em>, an exhibition of some of the extensive contemporary collection of the Toms Pauli Foundation, traces in the evolution of textile art from the 1960s to 2000s,<br />

Internationally renowned, thanks to her participation in numerous large solo and group exhibitions, this is her first appearance in the Netherlands for many years. The exhibition extends through June 5, 2016.</p>
